What is educational drama and what is its purpose?

At the INTERNATIONAL DRAMATISTS ASSOCIATION, educational drama is employed as a dynamic method of learning that harnesses the power of imagined experiences. In our Drama in Transpersonal Psychology (DITP) sessions, children actively engage by stepping into various roles within a story. This immersive approach allows them to deeply explore complex ideas, emotions, and perspectives. More than merely observing, participating in drama enables children to experience narratives from the inside out, creating a deep emotional and cognitive connection. This method reflects the most effective real-life learning scenarios where active participation integrates both cognitive and emotional responses. We call it “Drama in Education” because it comprehensively nurtures a child’s social, emotional, intellectual, and physical growth, offering a rich, multifaceted educational experience that aligns with the principles of transpersonal psychology. Through drama, children learn not just to act but to understand and transform their perceptions and interactions with the world around them, embodying the holistic approach of DITP.
